New Plymouth has one of the more even climates in the country. The sea keeps winters mild and summers warm rather than hot, and the city sits in climate zone 2 under the Building Code. What sets it apart is exposure. Westerly winds come straight off the Tasman, and many homes along the coast get a steady coating of salt spray.
Wind and salt both affect heat pumps. Strong gusts across an outdoor unit can reduce its efficiency and, on exposed sites, push rain into places it shouldn't go. Salt accelerates corrosion of coils, fins and fixings. Good placement and the right model help a heat pump last its full life.
What does New Plymouth's climate mean for your heat pump?
NIWA's 1991–2020 averages give New Plymouth July highs around 14°C and lows around 6°C. Frost is uncommon near the coast but more frequent inland towards Inglewood and Stratford, which sit at higher elevation closer to Taranaki Maunga and are noticeably colder.
For most coastal homes, the warm-climate sizing setting in our sizing calculator is a fair starting point. It gives about 3.9 kW for a moderately insulated 30 m² lounge with a 2.4 m stud. If you live inland, or in an exposed, draughty house on a windy ridge, round up to the next standard unit size and check the unit's heating output at low temperatures.
Wind also affects how a house feels. A home that is well insulated but full of draughts will lose warm air every time a westerly blows, and the heat pump will cycle harder to keep up. Sealing gaps around doors, windows and old fireplaces is a cheap step that makes any heat pump more effective.

What sort of houses are we fitting them to?
New Plymouth's older suburbs, such as Strandon, Fitzroy, Westown and Vogeltown, have many weatherboard villas, bungalows and post-war homes, often with suspended timber floors that make pipework and condensate drains easy to route. Coastal properties in the western suburbs, Bell Block and Ōākura tend to be more exposed to wind and salt.
Newer subdivisions in areas such as Bell Block and Ōākura have larger, better-insulated homes with open-plan living, where ducted systems or two high-wall units can give more even warmth than a single large unit.
What affects the price in New Plymouth?
Prices generally follow the national ranges in our heat pump cost guide. Coastal protection, such as corrosion-resistant coatings or specific models where the manufacturer recommends them, may add cost. So can wind-sheltering brackets, longer pipe runs to a sheltered side of the house and roof or wall mounting on two-storey homes.
Towns further out such as Inglewood, Waitara, Ōkato and Stratford may attract travel charges.

We don't have a contracted installer in New Plymouth yet, so bookings here are a waitlist. Join it and you'll be first to get the fixed price when we open. How it works
What do the New Plymouth District Council rules say?
A standard heat pump install doesn't usually need building consent, but the electrician must provide a Certificate of Compliance, and outdoor unit noise must meet the New Plymouth District Plan limits. Check the plan if the unit will be close to a neighbour's boundary.
If you're in a townhouse or unit title property, you'll need body corporate approval. Inland in Stratford District, check with Stratford District Council, which has its own district plan.
Local tips
- Mount the outdoor unit on the most sheltered side of the house, out of direct westerly wind, while keeping good airflow around it.
- Near the coast, ask whether the manufacturer has coastal installation or warranty conditions, and whether a corrosion-protected model is available.
- Use stainless or corrosion-resistant brackets and fixings on exposed sites.
- Rinse salt from the outdoor unit periodically as the manufacturer allows, and book regular servicing.
- Inland, size for colder nights than the city.

Heat pumps in New Plymouth: your questions
How much does heat pump installation cost in New Plymouth?
Expect about $2,500–$3,500 for a small high-wall unit and $3,200–$4,800 for a living-area unit installed. Coastal protection, wind shelter and travel to outlying towns can add cost. See the cost guide.
Does wind affect heat pumps in Taranaki?
Strong wind blowing across the outdoor unit can reduce performance and drive rain into the unit. Choose a sheltered location, with room for airflow, and ask the installer about wind baffles or brackets on exposed sites.
Will salt spray damage my heat pump in Ōākura?
Salt speeds up corrosion of coils and fixings. Ask about corrosion-protected coils and coastal installation guidance, and rinse and service the unit regularly to help it last.
What size heat pump do I need in New Plymouth?
On our sizing calculator, a moderately insulated 30 m² lounge with a 2.4 m stud needs about 3.9 kW, or about 5.3 kW without insulation. Inland in Inglewood or Stratford, or in an exposed older home, round up to the next standard unit size.
Is ducted or multi-split better for a Taranaki home?
Ducted systems suit homes with ceiling space and many rooms to heat. Multi-split systems are cheaper for two or three rooms and use one outdoor unit, which helps on sites with few sheltered spots. Compare ducted and multi-split.
Can I get a heat pump grant in New Plymouth?
Eligible owner-occupiers of pre-2008, insulated homes can get up to 90% of the cost covered, capped at $3,450, through Warmer Kiwi Homes. Read what's covered.
