About
The NZ heat pump reference directory
A working reference for New Zealand homeowners: refrigerant-licensed installers, sizing guidance keyed to NIWA climate zones, and editorial coverage of the EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes scheme.
Editorial scope
The directory covers domestic heat pump installation across the six NIWA climate zones — from the warm-temperate north to alpine inland Otago — with installer profiles, brand-by-brand performance notes, and guidance on EECA grant eligibility under the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme. Capacity recommendations are anchored to NZS 4218 insulation assumptions and the current Building Code H1 thermal envelope requirements.
Listing standards
To be listed, an installer must hold a current New Zealand refrigerant handling licence (Approved Filler / Class 1), be registered with the Climate Control Companies Association of New Zealand or equivalent trade body where applicable, operate brand-agnostically rather than as a single-brand dealer, and demonstrate a record of correct capacity sizing rather than upselling. Listings are reviewed against licence registers and rotated as the trade changes.
Sizing methodology
The sizing tool uses the standard New Zealand industry heuristic — 0.13 kW per m² for moderately-insulated housing — with corrections for ceiling height, insulation grade against NZS 4218, and NIWA climate zone. It bracket-estimates the right capacity to within roughly ten percent of a full heat-loss calculation and is intended to sanity-check installer quotes, not to replace an on-site assessment.

Regulatory note
General information only. Heat pump installation involving refrigerant work is regulated under the Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996 and must be carried out by a licensed handler. For installation specific to your home, engage one of the refrigerant-licensed installers listed here.
