How much does heat pump installation cost in Auckland?
Most Auckland quotes for a single high-wall heat pump, supplied and installed back-to-back, land between $1,500 and $4,500. The size of the unit and the brand set most of the price; the install itself is a smaller share. The table puts four Auckland installers' own published ranges side by side, each read on the business's website on 29 October 2026.
| Business | Small room (2–3.5 kW) | Living area (3.5–7 kW) | Large (7–9 kW) | Multi-split | Ducted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superior Property Services, Rosedale | $1,500–$3,000 | $2,500–$4,000 (5–7 kW) | $3,500–$5,500 | $5,000–$12,000 | $7,000–$20,000+ |
| Exotic Electrical, South Auckland | $1,700–$2,200 (2–2.5 kW) | $2,200–$2,800 (3.5–5 kW) | $2,800–$4,500+ | Not listed | Not listed |
| Varcoe, Auckland guide | $3,500–$4,500 for a straightforward single room, incl. GST | (same) | Not listed | $4,000–$7,000; three units $6,000–$8,000 | $8,000–$15,000 |
| Auckland Heatpump Services | $1,700–$4,000 for a single split | (same) | Not listed | From $5,000 | $8,000–$15,000 |
Supply and installation, as published on each business's website on 29 October 2026. Only Varcoe states its figures include GST; the others don't say, so ask. These are examples of the Auckland market, not a recommendation, and prices change. For comparison, Mitre 10 gives $1,700–$4,000 for a standard high-wall install nationally, and Top5.nz (August 2026) $3,200–$4,800 for a living-area unit.
The ranges overlap more than the headline numbers suggest. The low end, around $1,500 to $2,200, is a small 2–2.5 kW unit on a back-to-back install. The top of the single-room range, $4,000 to $4,500, is a premium brand, a bigger unit, or a quote that already includes the electrical work and GST.
What does a standard Auckland install include?
A standard install is back-to-back: the indoor unit on an outside wall and the outdoor unit on the ground directly behind it. Superior Property Services defines it as the unit, standard brackets, up to 3 m of pipe and commissioning. Anything beyond that is an extra, so check the quote lists each one:
- Electrical work. A dedicated circuit or switchboard work is often separate: Superior lists $200–$600, and Varcoe says older homes can add several hundred to over a thousand dollars.
- Pipe beyond the allowance. Usually charged per metre. Ask for the rate in writing before the site visit.
- Core drilling. Brick, block and concrete walls take longer to get through than weatherboard.
- Floor console instead of a high-wall. Superior lists $500–$1,000 more for the same output.
- Second-storey or roof-mounted outdoor units, which may need a bracket or scaffolding.
- Removing the old unit, which some quotes include and some don't.
What's the cheapest way to get a heat pump installed in Auckland?
The cheapest installed price is a small 2–2.5 kW unit on a back-to-back install, which Auckland installers publish from about $1,500 to $2,200. That suits a bedroom or a small study. In a living room it is the wrong saving: an undersized unit runs flat out, costs more to run and never gets the room warm.
Install-only is the other route. Auckland Heatpump Services lists installation of a unit you've bought yourself from $750 + GST ($862.50). Before buying a unit online, check the manufacturer's warranty terms for who may install it, and size the room first with our size calculator so you buy the right kW.
If you own and live in a pre-2008 home and hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo card, or live in a highest-need area, Warmer Kiwi Homes can pay 90% of a heat pump, capped at $3,450. The heat pump grant guide covers the other options, including bank green loans.
What pushes the price up in Auckland?
- Apartments and townhouses. Body corporate approval, balcony placement rules and parking or access all add time.
- Villas and bungalows. High studs mean a bigger unit for the same floor area, and pipe runs through the subfloor or around ornate ceilings take longer.
- Noise placement. The Auckland Unitary Plan sets a 40 dB LAeq night-time limit at the neighbour's boundary in the main residential zones. Keeping the outdoor unit away from a neighbour's bedroom can mean a longer pipe run.
- Travel. Waiheke Island, Warkworth and Waiuku can carry a travel or ferry charge, which should be itemised.
- Brand. On Exotic Electrical's own list, Haier runs $1,700–$2,250 and Mitsubishi $2,130–$2,300+ installed, before size is taken into account.

Worked example: a 5 kW heat pump in an Auckland lounge
A 30 m² lounge in a moderately insulated 1970s house on the North Shore with a 2.4 m stud comes out at about 3.9 kW on our size calculator. A big ranch slider tips it up to the next standard size, a 5 kW high-wall. At Exotic Electrical's published 3.5–5 kW range that's $2,200–$2,800; at Superior's 5–7 kW range, $2,500–$4,000. Add a dedicated circuit at Superior's $200–$600 and the realistic total is about $2,400 to $4,600, before any extra pipe.
How much is a multi-split or ducted heat pump in Auckland?
A multi-split, with one outdoor unit running two to four indoor units, is published at $4,000 to $12,000 in Auckland; Varcoe puts three indoor units at $6,000 to $8,000. Ducted systems start around $7,000 to $8,000 for a standard Auckland home and run to $15,000 to $20,000 or more for a large house with zoning. See ducted heat pump cost NZ and multi-split cost NZ.
How do you compare Auckland heat pump quotes?
Put them on the same basis: the same kW, GST included, the same pipe allowance, and electrical work either in or out of every quote. A quote that's $600 cheaper but leaves out the circuit and the certificate isn't cheaper. Our quote comparison guide has a checklist.
