How much does it cost to get a heat pump cleaned in NZ?

Most specialist cleaners and heat pump firms publish a fixed price of $109 to about $195 (including GST) for a deep clean of one high-wall unit, with a lower price for each extra unit cleaned on the same visit. The table shows six real published prices, each checked on the business's own website on 28 October 2026.

Prices as shown on each business's website on 28 October 2026. Where a price was listed + GST we added 15% in brackets; where GST wasn't stated we show the price as listed. These are examples of the market, not a recommendation, and prices change. Wider industry ranges: Top5.nz puts a single-unit service at $79–$249.

The spread is narrower than it looks. Once GST is added, five of the six sit between $145 and $195 for the first unit. The cheapest, $109, is a fixed-price Christchurch deep clean that covers the indoor and outdoor units.

What should a professional heat pump clean include?

A proper clean goes past the filters to the parts you can't safely reach: the indoor coil, the fan barrel where mould grows, and the condensate drain. Budget Electrical's own page warns that a cheap special which doesn't list a coil flush, a fan barrel clean and a drain test is the difference you're paying for. Before you book, check the quote lists:

  • Filters and front covers removed, washed and refitted.
  • The indoor coil flushed, usually with a bag or shroud fitted so the dirty water is caught rather than running down your wall.
  • The fan barrel cleaned, which is where most of the black mould and musty smell comes from.
  • The condensate drain flushed and tested so water can't back up and leak indoors.
  • The outdoor unit cleared of leaves and debris and its coil cleaned.
  • The unit run and tested before the technician leaves.

Can you clean a heat pump yourself?

You can clean the filters yourself, and you should: it is free, takes about ten minutes, and is the maintenance EECA and the manufacturers tell owners to keep up. Leave the coil, fan and drain to a technician. Mitsubishi Electric's cleaning guide warns never to apply water to the inner workings.

How often does a heat pump need a professional clean?

About once a year for a unit that runs most of the winter. Daikin NZ recommends an annual inspection by a qualified technician before heavy seasonal use. Book it in autumn, before the first cold snap, when cleaners are less busy. Homes with pets, smokers, a lot of cooking or coastal salt air may need it more often.

A musty smell when the unit starts, black specks on the louvres, weak airflow after a filter clean, or water dripping from the indoor unit all mean it's due now rather than next autumn.

What pushes the price up or down?

  • More units in one visit. Every business that lists an extra-unit price charges less for the second and later units: $30 to $75 less each, including GST.
  • Ducted systems. Some charge the same as a high-wall (AirCare, AirEffect); others start at $250 (Budget Electrical). Ask before booking.
  • Mould treatment. An anti-mould treatment is often an add-on, for example AirCare's Deep Clean Plus at $139 instead of $109.
  • GST. Several businesses quote + GST, which adds 15%. Compare prices on the same basis.
  • Repairs found during the clean. A drain that won't clear or a fault code becomes separate labour, usually at an hourly rate.
  • Travel. Outlying towns may carry a travel or vehicle charge.

Worked example: two heat pumps in one home

A house with a lounge unit and a bedroom unit, both due for a deep clean. At Beattie Air's Christchurch prices that's $149 + $89 = $238. At Auckland Heatpump Services' prices it's $130 + $65 = $195 + GST = $224.25. At AirEffect in the Bay of Plenty it's $298 + GST = $342.70. Booking both on one visit saves about $45 to $75 against two separate first-unit prices.

Is it worth cleaning an old heat pump, or should you replace it?

A clean is worth doing on any unit that still runs well; it is a fraction of the cost of a new one. If the unit is near the end of the 10 to 15 years Consumer NZ expects a heat pump to last, still heats poorly after a clean, or needs a major part, price a replacement first. A new high-wall is about $2,500–$4,800 installed. Our replacement cost guide compares repair against replace.

Frequently asked questions

How much is it to get a heat pump cleaned in NZ?

About $109 to $195 for the first high-wall unit, including GST, going by six NZ cleaners' published prices in October 2026. Extra units on the same visit cost about $75 to $150 each.

Can you clean your heat pump yourself?

Yes, the filters: vacuum them, rinse in lukewarm water, dry in the shade and refit. Leave the coil, fan and drain to a technician. See how to clean heat pump filters.

How often does a heat pump need to be cleaned?

Clean the filters every few weeks while it's in heavy use, and book a professional clean about once a year, ideally in autumn. Daikin NZ recommends an annual inspection before heavy seasonal use.

Is a heat pump clean the same as a service?

Often, but not always. Compare what each quote lists: a full job should include the coil, fan barrel and drain, not just the filters. A service usually adds electrical and performance checks.

Does cleaning a ducted heat pump cost more?

Sometimes. Of the six prices we checked, AirCare and AirEffect charge the same as a high-wall unit, while Budget Electrical starts ducted systems at $250.

Why does my heat pump smell musty?

Mould and dust build up on the coil and fan barrel inside the indoor unit. Clean the filters first; if the smell stays, it needs a professional deep clean of the coil and fan.
